The National Exchange Point is an electronic healthcare infrastructure. It is a network healthcare providers can connect to. Using this network, they can consult medical information about their patients in each other’s systems — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The National Exchange Point was especially developed and secured for this purpose.
The National Exchange Point is not a central database: no medical data is stored within the network. Data are only stored in the computer systems of your general practitioner and pharmacy. Other healthcare providers can access the most important information through the National Exchange Point.

Permission
If you give your permission, your GP and pharmacist will register your ‘burgerservicenummer’ (BSN - Civic Service Number) in the ‘Referral Index’ of the National Exchange Point. If you go to another healthcare provider, they can use your BSN to search the referral index to see which healthcare providers have medical information about you. That way your acting healthcare provider can see the information he needs for your treatment.
